Rainboard
From Salmo, B.C · NeuzTec 2017
Rainboard is a two-piece space rock outfit. Tom Reimer and Lyndon Schiewe form this lush guitar and drums duo. Their mountainous homes of the West Kootenay region of British Columbia provide a perfect backdrop to writing their shoegaze-tinged brand of noise rock. After the 2013 release of their first album ‘The Midnight Slide’ on the boutique cassette tape label ‘No Love’ from Toronto Rainboard have been writing and playing steadily. Using soft vocal melodies, sampled guitar drones and synth pads Rainboard has developed a distinct sound through their complex rhythmic drum patterns and full chords. Known for their bombastic live sound and energetic delivery on stage Rainboard has developed a loyal following.
Tom Reimer plays guitar and provides the vocals and lyrics to Rainboard. After living in Vancouver for many years Tom moved to Salmo. It is a small town in the beautiful West Kootenay region of B.C. The same day that Tom moved to his new home, July 1st of 2010 he saw Lyndon Scheiwe playing solo guitar with sequenced tracks at the local Canada Day Festivities. Tom was amazed by the similarities of styles between Lyndon and his own noisey sonic guitar explorations. After meeting Lyndon Tom learned of Lyndon’s drumming skills from playing in bands like BCDC, a Kootenay ACDC cover band, and his own art rock project, Random Device. Lyndon’s music was developed from playing in and seeing the early punk rock scene of Edmonton before his move to B.C. After some convincing Lyndon agreed to play with Tom and Rainboard was formed.
As a teenager Tom’s style was developed as a jazz guitarist and then later into improvised explorations with treated guitar and electronics in his twenties. After going to music school Tom lost the desire to play ‘commercial’ music and devoted his time to a heavier, noise and free improvised influenced form of music. In his time in Vancouver he developed many musical liaisons and his influences branched out to find the sounds of space-rock pioneers Hawkwind, and early krautrock like Noi irresistible. After that he searched out like-minded players to explore with. After years of playing he has developed as an original song writer and guitar player. Using his voice simply and with a somewhat androgynous style Rainboard is the complete amalgamation of all the skill both Tom and Lyndon have accumulated through their music life, sometimes cathartic, other times calculated.
