NeuzTec! takes place on the unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking Peoples, today the Songhees and xʷsepsəm (Esquimalt) Nations; of the SENĆOŦEN-speaking W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, today the W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip), SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout), W̱SIKEM (Tseycum), BOḰEĆEN (Pauquachin) and MÁLEXEȽ (Malahat) Nations; and of the SC’IȺNEW̱ (Beecher Bay), T’Sou-ke, Penelakut and paaʔčiidʔatx̣ (Pacheedaht) Nations, along with others who hold these lands and waters as traditional territory. Those relationships continue today.
NeuzTec! Festival and the Garden City Electronic Music Society acknowledge those relationships, and keep working to deepen our understanding of the cultural heritage, practices and traditional ways of the Indigenous Peoples of the Salish Sea and Turtle Island, historically, today, and into a sustainable future.
Reconciliation is one of our first priorities, and we carry it through art, music, education and philanthropy, in how we work with this community and with the environment of the Salish Sea.
We are grateful to the host partners who make space for this festival. For five years the Victoria Conservatory of Music has given NeuzTec a home each November, and its halls have carried the quadraphonic system with the same care they bring to a recital. Our thanks to the Conservatory, and to the faculty of its School of Music Technology and Creativity, whose collaboration has shaped the festival as much as the walls and stained glass have.
