Alix Goolden Hall
Alix Goolden Performance Hall, Victoria Conservatory of Music · 900 Johnson Street, Victoria, BC · 800 seated (440 main floor, 360 mezzanine)

Eight hundred seats under a forty-foot vaulted ceiling, four hundred and forty on the floor and three hundred and sixty on the mezzanine, in a building that opened in 1890 as a church sanctuary. Thomas Hooper designed it in the Richardsonian Romanesque manner, in rough-faced stone quarried near Salt Spring Island under round towers and cone roofs; it was designated a heritage property in 1979.
Carved pews, iron filigree and a hard stone shell give the room a long reverberant tail, generous to sustained tone and unforgiving of anything that depends on a dry attack.
It is the largest room the festival has used. NeuzTec 9 took it for the evening programme in 2024, five sets between seven and ten, while the afternoon ran in the Wood Hall a corridor away.
